As part of a research program investigating the performance
of potato crops on arable farmland and in conjunction with the University of
Newcastle, Cranfield University, the John Innes Centre and Rothamsted
Research, we were asked to develop and support a solar powered remote
monitoring station for monitoring soil and weather conditions.
The resulting field-based monitoring system measured a range of parameters
important to crop health, such as soil moisture, temperature, conductivity CO2
and Oxygen content, pH and levels of nitrate.
The system operated throughout the growing season, where gathered data was
logged and transmitted to the cloud via a mobile Internet connection. The
information generated was used to provide key insights into the relationships
between environmental and soil conditions and crop quality.
